Bobby Short to headline Jazz Fest at Severance
by Anthony Glassman
Cleveland-Cabaret icon Bobby Short, one of the few openly gay jazz musicians around, will be performing at Severance Hall on April 14. His appearance is part of the Tri-C Jazz Fest.
Short, who made his name playing the standards of what was then the day and is now a bygone era, tickles the ivories and sings on his latest album, available from Telarc Jazz, Bobby Short: Late Night at the Café Carlyle.
For jazz fans, Short is the cat's pajamas. Piano skills on a par with the legendary Nina Simone underscore his voice, which also begs comparison with Simone's, although his voice is smoother than her sensual growl.
From Cole Porter's "Night and Day" and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye” (gay composer, gay artist, great combination) to George
orchestra.com.
Gershwin and Johnny Mercer pieces, Short's mellifluous voice pours like treacle over the material. He's definitely worth a listen, and more than worth seeing in person, if the
rumors are true.
Tickets to Bobby Short's 3 pm matinée at Severance Hall, 11001 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, are available through the Severance Hall box office, 216-231-1111, or can be ordered online at http://www.cleveland
